When I got to the restaurant, the tables were all taken except for the ones where you have to squat, Japanese style. I'm not too comfortable sitting like that while I'm eating so I opted for the bar. Immediately I found these!
But I told myself, "get a hold of your horses, it's a Sunday afternoon after all"...
So I focused my mind on what I really came for. The waitress handed over the menu, and I asked what's their best seller. She said, "Miso". I politely asked which one. And again she said, "Miso". Ok, from there I think I got the point...and that is, there's no point in talking / arguing with her any further. After all she'll be handling my food and I'm really hungry.
I've had some Gyoza. It was good, BUT I've had better.
Hiyashi Ramen Goma - if you like cold noodles this is a good choice. Ingredients are fresh.
Half way through my meal, I cannot help but notice the conversation of a kid with his dad. They are sitting just two chairs away from me. The topic of the conversation? Ancient history! They talked about the way of life and the important events for the different civilizations from the past. The dad seems to know a lot, so I can't help but listen while I ate =) Talk about eavesdropping! It's nice to see a kid and his father spending time together on a Sunday afternoon to discuss history over a bowl of ramen.
Around this time the second serving came. Miso Chansu - yes, I her believed when the the waitress told me that Miso is the best seller, so I opted for that. They have 3 variants - Shoyu (soy-based), Shio (salt-based) or Miso (miso-based).
And this one did not dissappoint. In fact, and by far this is my kind of ramen. The meat is not dry, the broth is just perfect for me - not too thick, not too salty.
It was a rainy afternoon when I visited Ukokkei. It turned out to be an enjoyable and informative meal. Thaks to the father and son sitting beside me...and of course the delightful ramen.
Overall the place is nice. Not that big, more of a whole in the wall, and seems clean. Parking can be a bit difficult though. The price is more or less within the range of the last 2 ramen places that I've been lately.
They could improve on the service though. Ukokkei is located at
Unit 1-2, Upper G/F, Tesoro Building,
822 A. Arnaiz Avenue (formerly Pasay Road),
Makati City, Philippines
A bit of a predicament:
Among the three ramen places I've been lately, if I am to base my decision on the ramen alone and putting other factors aside, I'd go for Ukokkei! But if I am to take into consideration other aspects like, choices in the menu, the feel of the place, quality of service, etc etc etc - Ramen Bar is the one for me.
Who knows, maybe there is another ramen place out there that can top the three that I have mentioned. My quest doen't stop here. I hope to visit such a place soon.
Happy weekened everyone!
